How To Prevent Diabetes, 7 Easy ways

Diabetes affects millions of people around the world. You probably know someone with the disease.

The condition, when carefully managed – as is usually the case in the UK – has a limited impact. However, if uncontrolled, diabetes can cause blindness, kidney failure, heart disease, and other serious health problems.

Before diabetes is diagnosed, there is a period of time called prediabetes. This is when blood sugar levels are high, but not high even to be considered by medical professionals as diabetes.

Recent estimations suggest around 70 per cent of people who reach prediabetes go onto suffer from the disease itself.

But it's preventable. While certain factors – such as genes, age – are set, living healthily and being aware of the risks can mean you avoid diabetes or reverse it at its 'pre' stage.

Here is the 7 easy ways to prevent diabetes...

Exercise

It won't come as a surprise to learn that regular exercise helps fend off the disease.
Working out and aerobic and cardio training increases the insulin sensitivity of your cells, so your body doesn't need as much to keep everything in working order.

Water

Drinking water is good for all manner of things – it's the best thing you can feed your body. Sugary beverages are well-known to be poor nutritionally, and people who consume soda, juice and squash are putting themselves at greater risk of diabetes.

Lose weight

Not everyone overweight will get prediabetes and diabetes. But it does heighten the risk. People with prediabetes tend to carry excess weight in their midsection and around abdominal organs such as the liver.

Quit Smoking

Smoking has been shown to cause or contribute to various health complications – diabetes included.

Several studies show that smoking increases the chance of getting diabetes by 44 per cent in average smokers.

Eat fewer processes Food

Processed food (which is hard to define and not really a 'type', but for simplicity, let's say foods like ready meals and packaged cakes – you know the sort), are linked to health issues.

Any food heavy in refined oils, sugar, salt, refined grains and saturated fat are best eaten in moderation. Diabetes can be a result of a bad diet.

Coffee and tea

Water should be your primary refreshment, but coffee and tea are good too. "Studies have reported that drinking coffee on a daily basis reduced the risk of type 2
diabetesby 8–54%, with the greatest effect generally seen in people with the highest
consumption," Healthline said.

Sugar and Refined carbs

Sugar and refined carbs are high on the list of foods that can heighten the risk of diabetes.
